As a woman, noticing thinning hair or increased shedding can be alarming, especially when you’re not sure what’s causing it. Two of the most common reasons women experience hair loss are female pattern hair loss and telogen effluvium. While these conditions may cause similar hair loss symptoms, they are not the same and require different approaches to treatment. Understanding the difference is the first step toward effective care.
What Is Female Pattern Hair Loss?
Female pattern hair loss (also called female androgenetic alopecia) is a gradual, progressive condition of hair loss. It typically presents as thinning along the part line or at the crown of the scalp, while the frontal hairline is usually preserved. Individual hairs become finer over time, and overall hair density slowly decreases.
This type of hair loss is influenced by genetics and hormones and does not usually cause sudden shedding. Without treatment, female pattern hair loss tends to progress over time.
Common treatments for female pattern hair loss include:
- Topical medications to slow hair thinning
- Oral medications in appropriate patients
- Low-level light therapy
- Addressing underlying hormonal contributors
What Is Telogen Effluvium?
Telogen effluvium is a temporary shedding condition caused by a disruption in the hair growth cycle. It often occurs 2–3 months after a particular physical or emotional stressor, such as illness, surgery, childbirth, significant weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, or other traumatic or stressful experience.
Unlike female pattern hair loss, telogen effluvium causes diffuse shedding across the entire scalp rather than localized thinning. Fortunately, telogen effluvium is usually reversible, and hair growth often resumes once the underlying trigger is addressed.
Treatment for telogen effluvium focuses on:
- Identifying and correcting the trigger
- Nutritional evaluation and supplementation (if needed)
- Gentle hair care and reassurance during regrowth
