Razor Bumps (PFB): Blade Choice, Technique, and Treatment Options

Razor bumps—medically known as pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB)—are a common and frustrating problem, especially for men who shave regularly. If you’re dealing with painful bumps, ingrown hairs, or dark marks along the beard or neck, you’re not alone. At Medovate Dermatology, we frequently help patients manage razor bumps effectively and prevent long-term skin changes.

Why Razor Bumps Happen

PFB occurs when shaved hairs curl back into the skin or grow sideways instead of straight out. This triggers inflammation and leads to bumps, redness, and sometimes hyperpigmentation. Men with coarse, curly hair are more prone to razor bumps, but anyone who shaves can develop them—especially if they are using improper technique or the wrong razor.

Blade Choice Matters

One of the most important changes you can make is your razor selection:

  • Avoid multi-blade razors. These cut hairs too short, increasing the risk of ingrown hairs.
  • Use an electric trimmer. These leave hair slightly longer and reduce irritation.
  • Consider switching to a barber’s clipper (with clipping guard) to prevent shaving too close to the skin.
  • Change blades frequently. Dull blades cause tugging and inflammation and can highly irritate the skin.

Shaving Technique Tips

Small adjustments in how you shave can also make a big difference:

  • Always shave in the direction of hair growth, not against it.
  • Before shaving, water soften the beard with a hot, wet washcloth and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Always use a lubricating shave gel or cream, and let it sit for a minute before shaving.
  • Avoid stretching the skin while shaving.
  • Be gentle—use light pressure and only one stroke over each area.
  • If possible, avoid daily shaving—allowing hair to grow out slightly between shaves reduces skin irritation.

In-Office Treatment Options

When at-home changes aren’t enough, the following dermatologic treatments can help calm inflammation and prevent scarring from razor bumps:

  • Prescription topical medications can reduce inflammation and prevent infection.
  • Chemical peels can exfoliate and free trapped hairs.
  • Laser hair reduction can permanently decrease hair density; this is one of the most effective long-term solutions for PFB.
  • Various treatments can minimize dark marks or scarring caused by chronic razor bumps.
