Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
Spider veins are small, thin, spiky-looking veins that are often found on the legs. Sclerotherapy is a quick, in-office treatment that can collapse spider veins so that they are no longer visible. While sclerotherapy is not medically necessary, anyone who is bothered by the appearance of their spider veins may want to undergo treatment. Sclerotherapy can eliminate unsightly spider veins and create a smoother, clearer skin appearance.

Risk Factors for Spider Veins
People who are more likely to develop spider veins may meet the following criteria:
- Genetic or family history of vein problems
- Obesity
- Sun overexposure
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Long periods of standing or sitting during day-to-day life
Treatment
Sclerotherapy is quick and administered in the office. It works by injecting the spider vein with a chemical irritant. This causes the vein walls to seal themselves and the vein to collapse. The body naturally disposes of the now unusable vein and damaged blood vessels and reroutes the blood flow to other nearby veins. Over the following weeks, the spider vein will slowly disappear from view.
Recovery and Results
After the treatment, patients can immediately resume normal daily activities. They should wear compression garments for a full week. Results are visible within just a few weeks – as the body flushes the damaged blood vessels away, the spider vein will gradually disappear until the area becomes clear.
