Rosacea or chronic facial redness can be difficult to manage. It’s frustrating to have to deal with persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and the occasional acne-like bumps that flare up unpredictably on the face. If you’re looking for an effective resolution, one of the best treatments for skin redness and rosacea is photodynamic therapy (PDT). How exactly does PDT work for rosacea, and is it right for you?
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic therapy is a non-invasive treatment commonly used for various skin conditions, such as acne, sun damage, and of course, rosacea and skin redness. The treatment uses a light-sensitive topical solution and a special light source to activate it. When activated by the light, the solution destroys damaged or inflamed skin cells, reduces redness, and improves overall skin health.
How Can PDT Help with Rosacea?
Rosacea is often caused by inflammation and excessive blood vessel activity in the skin. Photodynamic therapy targets these issues in several ways:
- Reduces inflammation: PDT helps reduce the inflammatory responses in the skin that contribute to rosacea flare-ups.
- Improves skin texture: Over time, PDT treatments can help minimize the thickened, rough patches of skin often associated with rosacea.
- Decreases blood vessel visibility: One of the key benefits of PDT is its ability to shrink or diminish visible blood vessels that contribute to the redness of rosacea.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
PDT treatments start with the application of a topical photosensitizing drug, which is left to incubate on the skin for up to several days (depending on your needs). Then the treatment itself is performed in-office. A special wavelength light source is used to activate the drug, causing a sensation of tingling, warmth, heat, or burning in the affected area. The treatment lasts about 30 to 60 minutes, after which you can return home. You may experience some mild discomfort (similar to a sunburn) for a few days after the procedure, along with temporary redness or peeling. Patients usually return to work within one to two days.
The number of sessions needed varies from person to person, but many patients notice improvement after just one or two treatments. Your dermatologist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on the severity of your rosacea.
Is PDT Right for You?
If you’re struggling with rosacea or chronic facial redness, photodynamic therapy could be the right treatment for you. It is a safe and effective way to correct skin redness and improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.
