Types of Dermal Fillers

JUVÉDERM®

JUVÉDERM® is a family of injectables comprised of hyaluronic acid. Its smooth consistency allows for easy injections and natural-looking results. With several formulas available to treat a variety of age-related concerns, JUVÉDERM® can restore smooth and supple youthful skin. Results are visible immediately and last for up to one year before retreatment is needed.

Restylane®

Restylane® is another family of hyaluronic acid injectable fillers. It is frequently used to correct frown lines and nasolabial folds. Various Restylane® formulas (including Restylane® Lyft, formerly known as Perlane) can also improve cheek contour and shape and volumize the lips. Results are immediately noticeable and last for several months.

RADIESSE®

RADIESSE® is a dermal filler of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres that are suspended in a water-based gel. When injected, RADIESSE® stimulates collagen production and helps to minimize wrinkles and lines such as marionette lines, smile lines, and nasolabial folds. The results are immediately visible and can last for a year or longer.

Bellafill®

Bellafill® is a non-absorbable dermal filler comprised of bovine collagen and microspheres. Injections can be administered to correct facial wrinkles, folds, and depressions by providing enhanced volume and support to the skin. Results with Bellafill® are immediately visible and outlast virtually every other filler.

Sculptra® Aesthetic

Sculptra® Aesthetic is a poly-L-lactic acid filler that restores volume loss. It can be injected into scars, sunken cheeks, hollows beneath the eyes, and other areas with lipoatrophy to restore a fuller, more youthful and lively appearance. Results appear gradually and often last for up to two years.

Risks and Side Effects

These dermal fillers are all approved by the FDA. Rare risks or side effects include allergic reaction, redness, tenderness, discomfort, bumps, itching, bruising, and bleeding. Any risk can be reduced by choosing a qualified and experienced physician.

Candidates

Candidates for dermal fillers may have fine lines, wrinkles, deep creases, volume loss, depressed scars, sunken cheeks, thin lips, or other similar age-related symptoms in the face. Candidates should not be pregnant or nursing and should be in good physical health.

Treatment and Recovery

Treatment with dermal fillers is typically short, lasting only a matter of minutes. A topical or injectable anesthetic may be administered to minimize any potential discomfort. There is no downtime afterward. Should any side effects occur, they are usually short-lived and will be gone within a day or two.

Results

Results from most fillers are immediately visible; some improve gradually over the following weeks.  Depending on the filler, results can last for months up to several years. Regular treatment is typically recommended to maintain the desired results long term.
