What They Treat

BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are used to treat:

Moderate to severe wrinkles in the forehead, brow, and eye area
Forehead lines and wrinkles
Furrows and lines between the eyebrows
Crow’s feet and other wrinkles around the eyes

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. This FDA-approved treatment is administered as a series of small injections. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections relax the facial muscles and block the nerve impulses that cause the repetitive muscle contractions that lead to fine lines and wrinkles. As a result, the treated area lies smooth and flat so that you look relaxed and refreshed instead of tired, angry, and “old”.

In addition to treating wrinkles, BOTOX® also has other valuable uses. These include treating migraine headaches, excessive sweating, muscle spasms, and chronic back or jaw pain.

Dysport®

Dysport® is also an FDA-approved neurotoxin derived from the same bacterium as BOTOX® Cosmetic, and it operates in a similar way. When injected, Dysport® relaxes the facial muscles so that crown lines and other wrinkles disappear. Just like with BOTOX® Cosmetic, regular treatments are recommended to achieve the desired results.

Risks and Side Effects

Both BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are approved by the FDA, and side effects and risks are rare. The most common side effects include soreness, bruising, headaches, redness, or an allergic reaction, and these are only temporary. Any risk can be reduced by choosing an experienced and qualified physician.

Candidates

Candidates for these treatments have unwanted fine lines or wrinkles in the forehead, brow, and eye area. These wrinkles may be moderate to severe. Candidates should not be pregnant or nursing and should be in good physical health with no neuromuscular disorders.

Treatment and Recovery

Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® takes less than 15 minutes and has little to no discomfort. Your physician will use a very fine needle to carefully and strategically inject the neurotoxin into the treatment area. No anesthesia is necessary, and there is no downtime. You can resume your normal daily activities shortly afterward.

Results

Results from these treatments become visible within 24 hours and may continue to improve for several days. The effects will last for a few months. It is generally advised that patients continue with maintenance treatments every few months to prolong the results. If desired, either of these treatments may be combined with facial rejuvenation procedures such as facelift surgery, laser skin resurfacing, and others.
